A FOLK ART NAIVE BUTCHER'S SHOP DISPLAY MODEL
Late 19th century display model made of carved and painted wood depicting the interior of the shop hung with numerous cuts of meat and pies, with sets of shelves to each side with further cuts, copper pans and utensils, beneath a punchwork tin sign inscribed 'Est. 1871', with a carved and painted wooden figure of the butcher standing beside an octagonal chopping block, a pine table with trays of meat and a set of brass scales and weights.
It is thought that these models were put in the empty shop window once the meat had been moved to cold storage at the end of the day or possibly they were used as a visual guide of the different cuts of meat that were available. A related butcher's shop model sold in auction for £22,000 (hammer).
